Jordan Belfort ran a seafood and meat company in the 1980s. When the company was forced to close because it lost money, Belfort began selling shares in 1987. Belfort put his sales expertise in a completely different field when he began his career with brokerage firm in 1987. Here he learned the intricacies of being a stockbroker. Two years later, he began running his own investment company, Stratton Oakmont. Jordan and his partner Danny Porush became rich after using the infamous “pump-and-dump” scheme. As part of this plan, its brokers were required to force some of the shares onto the unsuspecting clients of the company, which helped inflate the prices of those shares.

As part of this deceptive scheme, his company sold off and made a profit. The US Securities and Exchange Commission decided to end the jagged Stratton Oakmont stock operation in 1992 and claimed that the company was manipulating stock prices and defrauding investors. Just two years later, Belfort exited an interesting brokerage business. In the suit that followed, the court asked Jordan to pay $ 110.4 million for defrauding several stockbrokers. While in prison, Belfort shared a cell with Tommy Chung, with whom he remained friends even after his release. Chung encouraged Belfort to write his experiences as a stockbroker. Jordan will continue to be credited with Chung in his current career as a writer and motivational speaker.
